Soundtrack To My Life

Waking up: Learn to fly-Foo Fighters. This was the first song I heard by them, and after this song i fell in love with their music.

First Day of School: My way or the highway-Limp Bizkit. My sister introduced me to this band.

Falling in Love: For who you are-Hillsong. They’re the greatest christian group out there. By listening to their music it has molded me into the drummer I am today.

Fight Song: Caught up-Usher. I love the feel of the song. When I hear this song I think of the music video, because I  heard it first on MTV.

Breaking Up: Drive-Incubus. A great song. I also think of the music video for this one, where he is drawing his body with his hand.

Prom: Blurry-Puddle of Mudd. This is a newer song that I fell in love with after I heard it playing on the radio.

Life: Ammunition-Switchfoot. They’re one of my favorite bands. This was the first song that was challenging for me when I first started out on the drums.
Mental Breakdown:

Driving: A little less sixteen candles-Fall Out Boy. The first song I heard by them. Even though a lot of people hate on them, I like their music.

Flashback: Bigger than my body-John Mayor. His music and guitar playing skills are amazing.

Wedding: Outta control-50 Cent. This song makes me think of my cousin Edward. He gave me this album and I liked a couple tracks on it. 

Birth Of Child: Life to lifeless-Killswitch Engage. This makes me wanna ride. (dirtbike) I heard this on a motocross DVD called Huevos.

Final Battle: Hallelujah-Paramore. I think I listen to their music at least once everyday. This makes me think of the video I just recently put up of me playing to this song. If you want to check it out it at: www.youtube.com/motoxpsyco

Death Scene: Time is running out-High Flight Society. I think of this past year working with my dad’s painting company when I hear this song. My dad would put the radio on 89.7 and this song would come on at least 3 or 4 times throughout the workday.

Funeral Song: Everything-Lifehouse. If I could marry this song I would. Everything about this song I love. I think of 3 years ago when I first heard this played by my churches lead guitarist Dustin.

End Credits: Like i love you-Justin Timberlake. Yes, I listen to Justin Timberlake. I love the drums and acoustic in this song. I used to practice to this song all the time. When I was done playing it I would have calices all over my hands.

I think my life changing event happened on April 1,2000. That’s the day my Uncle died in his sleep. It was a day that will change my life forever. On the morning of April 1st my sister and I were getting ready for school. At the time I was attending Bussey Middle School and my sister was attending North Garland High School. It was like the same old routine, wake up, put on our clothes, brush our teeth and get ready to leave. Well about 7:15 a.m. I heard my father calling my Uncle’s name to get up for work. When my Uncle didn’t answer he went into the room to check on him. After calling his name a couple more times my sister came into my room and the first words to come out her mouth was, “I think Uncle Garry is dead!” Before I could fully comprehend what was just said to me I went running into his room where I saw my dad trying to wake him up. He was saying, ”Garry wake up, Garry wake up!” After he didn’t respond my dad broke down with tears in his eyes as he laid his head in my Uncle’s chest. He told me to go call my mom and tell her what was happening. I was still in total shock and could barely move. But I snapped out of it and ran into the kitchen to call my mom who was already headed to work. She couldn’t believe what I was saying, but she told me she would be there as soon as she could. After I got off the phone with her I took the phone to my dad and he called the paramedics and told them what was going on. They came maybe fifteen minutes after we called, then pulled him out of bed, laid him on the floor and began to try and revive him. After five tries they pronounced him dead. They said he died of congested heart failure, which happens when your heart stops for a second and then starts back up. I was devastated; he was my closest and favoritest Uncle. He will always be that guy that wouldn’t take anything from nobody. The one who would always give and never expect anything in return.  He was such a great role model and till this day he will always be an inspiration to me. All of my stories are written for him and the rest of my family. By writing about him I keep his spirit alive throughout my house and my life. He was a wonderful man and a wonderful uncle. I am proud to say that my Uncle Garry was and always will be, “The Positive Male Role” model in my life. He gave my sister and me a better life. We will always love him for that.

Turning Point in My Life

A life changing experience in my life was when my friend Loui Olivari died. It really awakened me to how the world works and how fragile life is. I remember the day perfectly. I was practicing with my drum teacher, Ted at his house, when Loui passed away from a heart attack in his apartment. Later we learned that his heart had stopped while he was driving due to his high blood pressure. Therefore his car went out of control when he lost consciousness, and drifted into the oncoming traffic. Unaware of what happened my mom and me, we went home and I went to my friend Patrick’s house, who lived on the next street from me. We spent the entire afternoon together and surprisingly my mom didn’t even call me up for dinner, so I stayed with them and we had a barbecue. I remember sitting on the bench eating grilled hamburgers, relaxing with Patrick and his parents, and thinking how great life was. After dinner Patrick’s mom went off somewhere, I wasn’t sure where, but I just figured she went for a Coke run as usual. I stayed and listened to music while Patrick messed around on his guitar. Then I got an unexpected call to go back home. So I said goodnight and went on my way. My mom sounded lost and very calm on the phone, not her usual happy self. Wondering what was happening I slowly opened the door to see my mom and dad sitting together on the blue and white couches. My mom asked me to sit down, so I sat between them while my mother began to explain how Loui had been in a car accident earlier that afternoon. “His car veered into the oncoming traffic and was hit from the side…he didn’t survive.” I remember at that moment dad clenching my shoulder so much it hurt, but I was numb to the pain, we all were. I didn’t cry. None of us did. We were unable to comprehend how this could possibly be true. It was at this time that I began to realize how fragile and vulnerable we are, that in just one second a person can go from being alive with family, friends, years of education, and goals, to being gone, wasted, never to come back. My friend would never return, never walk through the church doors of Livingway and greet me. I would never get to see him play his keyboard for praise and worship on sundays. My mother had always told me that bodies are strong things. If I got a cut or scrape I would take time to clean it, cover it and take care of it. “Your body is a strong thing; it will heal, it will be ok.” Suddenly I realized that this was not always the case, there is not always hope, and sometimes what happens is unchangeable. One day it will be ok. For now, I am left with an empty feeling in my heart. However I am forever blessed with the realization of how precious the people we love are, and now I know to cherish every moment, while it lasts.

Admiration for a Great Rider

I admire a guy whose name is Travis Pastrana. He is a freestyle dirt bike competitor who has been great ever since he first sat on a bike. The sport of Professional motocross has not been the same since Travis Pastrana arrived on the scene. Travis has brought a kind of new energy since turning pro in 1999. In addition to being among the world’s elite in motocross and supercross racing, Pastrana is also considered to be the best freestyle rider in the world. It is this versatility that makes Travis Pastrana so fascinating. He’s won multiple competitions, like the X-Games, seven times in a row. Growing up as a kid, I got the chance to see Travis at a couple of his events. After seeing how great he was, it made me want to be just like him. He turned pro when he was only sixteen years old and to this day he is still the youngest pro who has entered the sport. Not only did he turn pro at the tender age of sixteen, which is a great feat, but he was beating guys who were way older than him and who had been competing way longer than him. Pulling death-defying stunts in the air, he always managed to bring and complete the craziest tricks. On August 4, 2006, he became the first rider to land a double back flip in competition, winning his first Moto X Best Trick Gold Medal. It is believed that only one judge did not rate the run 100/100, making the final score a 98.60, which is the highest score that will probably ever be put up. Not only do I admire Travis because he is the “best in the business”, but I also admire him because he is very humble. After every event he wins he never looks to boast or put other riders down, but instead to thank the fans for their support and all his sponsors who helped him get where he is. Travis is a charismatic, polite and determined individual who enjoys life to the fullest. He can be seen in most motocross and freestyle videos pushing the limits of the sport he loves. His habit of pushing the limit does not stop with racing though. He recently took up skydiving and he will be featured in a new video doing back flips on his 250cc Suzuki while jumping into the Grand Canyon. He also had a chance to drive a factory Subaru World Championship winning rally car in England. The first priority in the Pastrana family, though, has always been education. Travis is taking online classes at the University of Maryland, and is currently majoring in Communication and Broadcasting. Travis’s perseverance is always evident, whether it is in racing, freestyle, skydiving, or driving. Through it all, he has remained articulate, respectful, creative, down-to-earth, confident, and very, very fast. He has never bothered with tattoos, piercings, tantrums, or an overblown ego. Travis merely does what he loves to do, ride his motorcycle, which is the most powerful expression of all. Whether it is on land, sea or air, Travis Pastrana makes his mark.
